Position Before Action

A practical Sun Tzu lens for making business moves from strength instead of urgency.

Most teams ask, "What should we do next?" too early.

Sun Tzu would ask a colder question first: "What is our position?"

Position is the hidden decision

Position includes timing, resources, morale, distribution, trust, and the alternatives available to each side. A weak move from a strong position can still work. A brilliant move from a poor position often becomes expensive.

Before acting, define the field:

  • What advantage already exists?
  • What must not be risked?
  • Which competitor is forced to move first?
  • Which customer pain is urgent enough to create pull?

The operator's takeaway

Do not confuse motion with strategy. The first move is often to improve the conditions under which every later move will be judged.
